From The Ormeau Road to Uluru

Andrew steps in time
with his family by his side
underneath the rippling
Orange banner in the sky
and closes his ears to the
screams of protest, disbelief
and listens only to
tradition on the street
Bowler hats as far as the eye can see
and The Sash My Father Wore ringing in his ears
and Grandpa Dave, sprightly though he’s eighty
walks proudly down the centre of this road
and every road
or any path

From the Ormeau Road to Uluru
Andrew follows on
underneath the rippling
orange sun in the sky
and closes his eyes
to the signs
‘please don’t climb’
and hears the beginning
of a traditions disbelief
with the shuffle of his feet
on the scorched red path
as he makes it to the top
scuffing up the dry dusty earth
Orange as far as the eye can see
and a new awareness
ringing in his ears.
