I Leave This At Your Ear For When You Wake

you can dial answer phone
and hear the hiss and pop of distance
the miles crackling down the line
sounds come disconnected in layers
know I am cross legged on the cold tile floor
my head resting on the structure behind
a safety net of immovable concrete.
Know my fingernail scratches the peeling paintwork
exposing to the air the small grooves and hollows
where miniscule insects play out their days
living and dying
know I am smiling as I leave a message of silence
perhaps a minute long, no more
picturing you sleepy headed listening to my day ending
as yours is beginning,
grimacing at the price in pounds
cursing the tariff that doesn’t fit with our tradition.
