Brisbane

Rising cackle, outside
the window
four floors up in Bunk Brisbane
and I may as well
be sitting next to you in Bar below.
Drunk on your childish
enthusiasm for life,
you chant words of a song
my mouth pretends to know
a mantra, a manifesto, a siren
wailing your arrival
and I, the rain
on your parade.

“you chant words of a song
    my mouth pretends to know”

Like my children do, mouthing the sounds of a song they don’t quite know the exact words to but feel the emotion all the same.
